Here are some freely available softwares which you can use for simple editing of your photos.
Gimp, Photoscape, Paint.net etc. for PC and you can also find softwares for android like pixart.
Main things which you can edit using these softwares are:
Crop. You can easily crop photos. If you want to simple regtangular crop the photo, it is very easy but if you want to crop irregulary like cutting the background you can only do this task using softwares like gimp.
Brightness and related corrections. This type of correction features are almost available in almost all editing softwares. You can easily correct things like brightness, contrast, sharpness etc. But as like professional correction you need softwares like gimp and a little knowledge.
These things are the basic things but you can also do other things like color changing, sketch making, text adding, image overllaping, symbols and shapes adding etc. simply.
For professional as well as simple use Gimp is the best freely available software but you may require some basic knowledge to use this. You may watch video tutorials to learn using Gimp on youtube also.
But as to do simple editing you don't require any tips and tutorial. Even you automatically get to know how you can use the software.
