  • Types of Storage Devices
  • Review for various Storage Devices
Let us start with our first question.

What are storage devices ?

In simple language, the devices that can store, record or even process the data are called storage devices. They store the data in various forms like in the form of energy, some what like electromagnetic things etc. I don't want to go deep in its internal technology. Various storage devices have various capacities. Here by capacity, I mean the amount of data a device can hold. Digital storage is measured in units like kilobyte(KB), megabyte(MB), gigabyte(GB) etc. Therefore the capacity of these devices is also measured in these units, normally in GB.

Types of storage devices.

Now, there are a lot of storage devices available under various types. Actually, there are three major types.

  1. Magnetic Storage Devices
  2. Optical Storage Devices
  3. Flash Storage Devices

Let us briefly know about each type.
Magnetic Storage Devices: These devices use some technology related to magnets to store digital data, that's why so called Magnetic Storage Devices. One of the best example of this type of storage devices is Hard Disk.
Hard Disk: We all know, Hard Disk is used in desktop as well as laptop computers as the main source to store all the data. Now, one more storage device SSD has come, which has many benefits over Hard disk. Hard disk is available as a internal device to be used in desktops and laptops as well as in the form of a external device usually called external or portable hard disk. Hard disks are available in various capacities from a few GB to TB. (1 TB = 1000 GB)
Here are the images of Internal as well as external Hard disks.

Optical Storage Devices: The word optics means related to light. So, Optical Storage Devices make use of light and laser to read and store data. Examples of optical storage devices are Cd's, DVDs and Blu-Ray Disks.
Cd's have capacity from a few MB to closely a GB, DVDs have capacity from 4 GB to 16 GB. While Blu-ray disks can store about 25 to 120 GB.
Flash Storage Devices: These are the Devices which make use of Flash Memory to store the data. Examples: USB flash drives (pen-drives), SD cards, SSD. Flash storage are going popular these days, because of their benefits. They are portable, so easy to carry anywhere.
Pen drives are the best way to transfer files from one device to another and are also available at cheap prices. Their capacity varies from a few MB to 512 GB maybe a TB too. One more type of these usb flash drives, OTG pen drives which can connect to smart phones directly.

Review for various Storage Devices

Let me give you a short review about these storage devices.
For desktops and laptops Internal as well as external Hard Disks are fine. Most of the smart phones accept SD cards as a secondary memory to store data. optical devices are fine but need more care like prevention from scratches. Flash Devices like pen drives works well everywhere due to their easy care and portability.Depending on your requirement you can choose any type of storage device. For example opt USB flash drives to store the data you needed many times at different places.
One more thing choose the device of trusted quality. This is the major factor which matter. There are many trusted brands, which ensures you to provide the best. To be very sure about the right quality and device, always compare them. Comparison of various devices help you to choose the best for you. You can compare these Devices online and even read reviews about them.
